Seven Deadly Sins of LiPo Care!
As a friendly reminder, here is a little list of things to keep in mind as you care for your Lipo battery packs.
The seven main things that shorten LiPo battery life are:
1 HEAT
2 LEAVING A LIPO FULLY CHARGED FOR SEVERAL DAYS
3 OVER DISCHARGING (voltage & current)
4 OVER CHARGING (voltage & current)
5 INADEQUATE BALANCING
6 IMPROPER STORAGE VOLTAGE
7 PHYSICAL DAMAGE (dropping, cutting the cell casing, prying cells apart, etc.)
Now that we are heading into a period when flying time will be limited, a good task to get done now is to go through your battery packs and make sure they are all at storage voltage (3.85 volts/cell) and store them in a cool, dry place. Your garage or basement might be the best place to store your packs for the winter as you want to keep the packs cool, but not in any place where the temperature can approach freezing as the electrolytic fluid in the packs can freeze, ruining the battery.
I’ll be writing future blurbs about battery care, including proper disposal in future newsletter updates.
