How to get started in Radio Control

What’s involved in getting into radio control?

First of all, the type of planes we fly, aren’t the toy store variety. Toy airplanes are a waste of time and money and usually break quickly and don’t fly well. The planes we fly have the same controls and flight characteristics as a full size aircraft.

How do I get started?

You must join the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) which provides the liability insurance you need to fly at our club or any other club in the country.

Apply for membership to the Keystone Clippers. You can’t learn to fly R/C on your own. Our club will guide you thru all the steps from joining the AMA to helping you select your airplane, field equipment and then teaching you to fly. We have several qualified instructors that will teach you properly and take you thru qualification so you can fly on your own.

Of course everyone wants to know what all this costs. AMA membership is free up to 19 years of age. Over 19 is

$75.00 annually and this includes a monthly magazine called Model Aviation. Keystone Clippers dues are $75.00 a year (dues are free for 19 and under). Your airplane and field equipment will cost approximately $500.00.
